Portrait oil painting on canvas of Hall Samuel (1781-1863) by Barber Thomas, [1768-1843]. 29.5x24.5"/75x62cm, [formerly in gilt frame 37x32x3.5"/94x82x9cm]. of Hall Samuel as a young man, TQL looking R, holding a book. Hall Samuel from Nottingham was the inventor of the surface condenser for steam boilers, important in the development of the cotton textile industry and the lace industry of Nottingham. Barber Thomas was a Nottingham based artist who studied under Thomas Lawrence in London and specialised in the portraits of prosperous families in the Midlands and north of England
