'Shadow Racer', lightweight sports wheelchair for track and road racing, manufactured by Quickie for Sunrise Medical Ltd, England, 1993-1995

Wheelchair sports have recently had greater recognition by sport’s governing bodies. They have also received greater acceptance by the viewing public. These changes have been accompanied by significant advances in wheelchair design and the application of material technology. The Shadow Racer is a rigid frame, custom-built aerodynamic wheelchair. It is designed for track and road racing. It is a ‘state of the art’ machine. The original Shadow Racer was designed by Jim Martinson, an injured Vietnam veteran. He joined the company Quickie Designs. It manufactures the wheelchair along with tennis chairs, basketball chairs, mono-skis and water skis.
