Painting. Burning Off a Ship, 1750 / by A.C. Williams, c1962. Oil on board; 50x65cm. Depicting the process of breaming in ship repair; with the sailing ship lying on her side within the dockyard basin, fitted with a special careening rig, hauled over by capstan, rope and pulley, to expose weeds and barnacles. Breaming or burning these off with fires of furze, fagots or reeds was followed by scraping clean and painting with a mixture of time, tallow and sulphur
