Painting. Royal Mail Steamers, 1841-1845. Oil on canvas; 76x110cm in gilt frame 129x154x8cm. Off Southampton Water, the fleet of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (founded 1839); in March 1841, contracted to convey mail between Britain, West India and Gulf of Mexico; fleet of 14 steamships built to Admiralty specifications embodying John Scott Russell's wave-line principle, also usable in event of war; shown, 'Clyde' and 'Teviot' built of wood 1841 by Robert Duncan & Co, Greenock. The Clyde was broken up in 1865, a year after the lapse of the Teviot, United Kingdom.
