Watercolour, View of the construction of the Eastern Counties Railway near Ilford, by Thomas Colman Dibdin, 1838. Depicts a brick bridge over the railway, with a train of spoil wagons passing beneath. Two navvies are sat on the last wagon. A locomotive can be seen on the adjacent line, beneath the arch. At left is the roof of a thatched cottage. In the foreground at right a man in a red waistcoat is knelt down in some bushes, while a man and a dog stand alongside. There is a railway wagon at right, with a sleeping navvy leant against it. Other navvies are nearby, in a temporary construction protected by a tarpaulin, or leant against the embankment. Signed at bottom left "T C Dibdin 1838". Paper pasted on a card mount 282 x 380mm. Enclosed in a matte, 436 x 583mm.
