Painting. SS "Scotland" / by J Scott, 1865. Oil on canvas; in gilt frame [880 x1440 x35mm]. Signed and dated brc. Portrait, ship. Iron-clad 3-masted barque rigged screw steamer, at sea under sail and steam. National Steam Navigation Company; completed 1865 by Palmer's, Jarrow. Destroyed in collision with the Kate Dyer off Fire Island, New York, 1 December 1866, driven to wreck ashore; the position marked by the Scotland lightship. In the year of her life she was regarded as the most advanced transatlantic ship of her time
