Model of Choro fishing boat
Whole model of a Choro fishing boat, Japan
This is an open sculling sampan, with fine lines, high bow and square stern and fitted with internal ribs and stretchers.
Designed for use on rivers, it differs from the small sampans of the sea-coast in being very narrow in proportion to the length and in being propelled by four oars and one long steering "yuloh". The use of oars in a Japanese craft is unusual.
