Model, of 6-metre sailing cutter racing yacht 'May-be'

Made:
1929 in Stockholm

1:6 scale model of the six-metre yacht “May-Be” made by Captain John Schussler in 1929. “May-Be” was designed my Gustaf Estlander and built in 1927 at Ramsö, near Stockholm.

“May-Be” was a very successful racing yacht and in her first year she won the Scandinavian Gold Cup in 1927. This international trophy for six-metre yachts had been in possession of America for three years before her success brought the cup to Sweden.

The model illustrates a typical modern “Marconi” rig with a lofty and narrow sail-plan. It also has a very flat jib which reflects a contemporary development in racing yachts. The sails, known as “Genoa” jibs, were developed in Sweden and proved to be extremely effective for yacht racing at the time, likely contributing to the success of “May-Be” in the Scandinavian Gold Cup.
