Watercolour, View of the construction of the Eastern Counties Railway near Ilford, by Thomas Colman Dibdin, 1838. Depicts the railway line, at left, with a cart loaded with hay passing over an overbridge. Navvies are working on the track. At right is a large house with a red-tiled roof. In the foreground at right is a contractor's railway line laid on rough timber sleepers on an embankment. A wagon load of spoil stands on this line, with a white horse alongside. A navvy accompanied by a boy leads another horse, and stops to talk with a navvy with his tools in a bucket suspended over his shoulder. Signed at bottom right, "T C Dibdin 1838". Paper, pasted on a card mount, 270 x 370mm. Enclosed in a card matte, 438 x 583mm.
