Model of a Racing eight, c. 1900. Keel-less (i.e. no central structural basis of the hull) boats of this type have been used for racing purposes in England since 1856 and form a fine examples of a method which combines the lightness of construction with a reasonable strength. Since 1873 the crew of eight oarsmen were provided with sliding seats in order to increase the efficiency of their rowing or sculling. Scale 1:16
