Model of a Teifi Coracle. Made by Mr J.H. Craine. Made with a frame-work of willow and hazel withies, coracles were originally covered hide but more recently tarred cloth has been used. There are two classes: one bowl-shaped & the other almost square in plan. Whole model of a River Teifi coracle, c.1930. Scale1:6
In Wales and along the Welsh Marches, coracles have been employed as river fishing craft for many centuries.
This object represents a coracle from the River Teify in south-west Wales. No standard dimensions or proportions were established for these coracles, as the important consideration in their construction was the stature and weight of the owner.
Essentially a one-person vessel, the coracle was extremely well-suited for use on rapidly flowing rivers and light enough to be carried on the owner's back for transportation on land.
