Mycelial protein food, one cylindrical piece, sprayed with N-methoxymethyl nylon solution (soluble nylon catalon), 5 per cent in industrial methylated spirit. Freeze dried and consolidated with isobutyl methacrylate, 15 per cent in xylene, made by Rank Hovis MacDougall. Freeze dried and treated, preserved by Archaeological Research Centre, National Maritime Museum.

This breadcrumbed nugget is one of the oldest samples of Quorn. Made in 1981, when it was still a lab experiment – and before it was branded ‘Quorn’. Today, burgers are one of many Quorn meat-substitute products, from sausages to mince.
