Lithograph, Britannia Tubular Bridge over the Menai Straits showing the Floating of the Second Tube, 23 January 1849, by G Hawkins. Depicts the floating of the tubular section which was to carry the tracks into position. The tube floats on large pontoons between the stone piers of the bridge, and there are onlookers on the shore and in boats. The Britannia Bridge was built to carry the Chester and Holyhead Railway between the mainland of North Wales and the isle of Anglesey. Drawn and lithographed by G Hawkins. Printed by Day and Haghe, lithographers to the Queen. Published by Messrs Day and Son, 17 Gate Street, London. July 1850.
