The First Railway Jubilee in the World

This satirical cartoon mocked the fiftieth anniversary celebrations of the Stockton and Darlington Railway by the North Eastern Railway. Railway accidents feature in several parts of the cartoon. The large creature at the top of the cartoon represents the North Eastern Railway. It is a mechanical version of the Lamton Worm, a mythical creature from a cautionary tale in County Durham folklore.
