Spoons and fork set for babies, made of polypropylene, by Jackel International Ltd., c. 1996
Experts recommend first introducing babies to a spoon, as it is easier to use and then adding in a fork and finally a knife. Each have short handles as they are easier to control. Generally, children will start using a spoon between 15 to 18 months old, but every child is different, with some taking longer or a shorter amount of time. According to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, children become confident in using a knife and fork by age seven.
