An example of babycare equipment from the Heinz Baby Basics range: a pack of weaning spoons made of thermoplastic elastomer (Flexisoft), by Vital Baby Innovations Ltd., c. 1996
Weaning spoons are used to introduce babies to pureed and soft foods as they start to learn how to feed themselves. Experts recommend first introducing babies to a spoon, as it is easier to use and gradually then adding in a fork and finally a knife. Each have short handles as they are easier to control. Generally, children will start using a spoon between 15 to 18 months old, but every child is different, with some taking longer or a shorter amount of time. According to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, children become confident in using a knife and fork by age seven.
