Model of a blacksmith's shop, c.1900.

This model is of a blacksmith's shop and tools. Until about 1900, a blacksmith's shop could be found in almost every community in Britain. George Bissell, a blacksmith with a shop in Myrdle Street, Stepney, made these exquisite tools of the blacksmith's trade between 1870 and 1886. In the model, made to scale 1:12, the shop structure was rebuilt in 1957 by our Museum workshops to better accommodate the fine range of tools, whilst retaining the spirit of the original nineteenth century smithy.
