Kodak DCS DC3 camera back fitted to a Nikon HP F3 camera, with digital storage unit, cable and battery pack, 1990.

The first digital cameras were bulky and expensive. The picture quality was poor, and the cameras could be unreliable and hard to use. However, they were also lightweight, and images could be downloaded directly into computers as digital files. The Kodak DC3 camera connected directly to a storage unit. Without the storage unit pictures would not be saved.
