Triang child's clothes washing set comprising mangle, bucket, washboard, scrubbing tub and clothes horse. English, 1950-1959.
This model is a Triang miniature clothes-washing set, comprising mangle, bucket, scrubbing tub, washboard and clothes horse. Toys such as this, aimed specifically at girls, probably served to reinforce social attitudes in the post-war world. Although more women than ever before were going out to work, the ideal woman was perceived by many as a child-rearing homemaker, within a nuclear family in which the husband was the undisputed breadwinner. In this servantless world housework was the housewife's domain, and little daughters would be brought up in the footsteps of their mothers. The equivalent toy for boys might be a tool set to mimic 'Dad about the house.'
