Marine mercury cistern barometer, Bate, London, England, Britain, mid-1800s. Marked with the broad arrow signifying property of the British government, and the number 15. Scale in inches of barometric pressure (27 to 31), with vernier scale and mercury thermometer. Formerly part of the collections of the Meteorological Office.

In this barometer, which is of robust design for marine use, readings are taken by aligning the pointer at the top of the vernier with the top of the mercury column. The atmospheric pressure is indicated where the divisions on the smaller vernier scale align exactly with the divisions on the larger, main scale.

The Bate firm was a family instrument-making firm primarily associated with Robert Brettell Bate (1782-1847). Between 1824 and 1847 the firm was based at 20-21 Poultry in the City of London. Amongst their various clients was the Admiralty, to whom he firm supplied instruments and charts. After the death of R. B. Bate, the firm was carried on by his wife Anna until 1850; she died the following year.
