Shield and locking pincers for Clapp and Sandbrook Safety Lamp from Royal Commission on Accidents in Mines 1879-86, plus two safety lamps (see 2 stroke numbers).
Safety devices were increasingly employed to prevent accidents arising from careless or improper use of safety lamps in mines, one of the most frequent temptations being for the miner to relight his own lamp in the working place. This lamp, patented in 1885-6 by Messrs. W. J. Clapp and W. Sandbrook, is of the Clanny type. Inside the bonnet is a screen to direct the air upward. An extinguisher, consisting of a piece of plate sliding on two wires, is held in a raised position against a spring by a fusible wire thread. The reservoir is locked by a bolt on which is a rack engaging with teeth on the end of a pin turned by a key.
