Safety lamp, Marsaut, Howat patent deflector, maker: Johnson, Clapham and Morris, Manchester, marking: makers name and Deflector lamp Howat's patent registered trade mark no.63005, 1888
In this arrangement, patented in 1886 by Mr. A. Howat, the air enters through a row of holes in the flange supporting the bonnet, is directed upward by a short cylinder shielding the gauze, and is then deflected downward through the gauzes by an annular diaphragm. The lamp shown is of the Marsaut type, but the deflector has been applied to other types. Lead plug locks are fitted to both reservoir and bonnet. The illuminating power is high, and the lamp will burn in an atmosphere which extinguishes even unbonneted lamps.
