Safety lantern, Crane, no specific type, maker: W. Burgess, Birmingham, marking: makers name, 1848-65

This was brought out as a safety lamp in 1848 by Mr. J. Crane, but it encloses too large an internal volume to be safe where firedamp is present; it could only be used to screen the flame from draughts. The three sides are of gauze or else the upper part is glazed, and the remainder is made of gauze for the admission of air; there is a gauze cap, and the duplex wick has a glass chimney. A padlock is fitted.
