Safety lamp, Marsaut, Teale's self-extinguishing device, maker: W.E. Teale and Co., Swinton, Manchester, marking: makers name, 1901
This is a self-extinguishing Marsaut lamp for burning petroleum spirit, the reservoir being filled with an absorbent material. It cannot be opened without extinguishing the light, being fitted with an improved form of Teale's protector " lock (see No. 32). Advantage is taken of the height to which petroleum spirit will rise by capillary action to use a long wick tube to the reservoir, screwed into a nut or sleeve; after lighting, the two are screwed into the following - up ring, and the sleeve is prevented from being slacked back by a bolt shot into.it The nut is of such a length that when the reservoir is unscrewed the light is extinguished for lack of air. As an additional preventive the reservoir is held by a push button and lead wire rivet.
