Model (scale 1.48) of rolled steel pithead frame at Burley Colliery, Coventry.

This is a model of a Colliery pithead frame. Traditionally, the difficulty of getting coal to the surface created a major bottleneck preventing the expansion of output. By the beginning of the twentieth century, electrically powered winding gear was being used. This equipment needed to be able to bring up hundreds of tonnes of coal per hour. This 1:48 scale model shows the first rolled steel pitframe installed at Binley Colliery near Coventry in 1907-10, built for shafts 900 feet (274 metres) deep. Up to 4.35 tonnes of coal could be raised each time. The model was made at the Science Museum's own workshops from information supplied by the Glengarnock Iron & Steel Company Ltd.
