Open lamp used in the salt workings of Strassfurt Prussian Saxony

This urn-shaped lamp has wire loops for handling. Similar lamps are also used in the U.S.A. The oil reservoir has a wick projecting at the side through a spout, which has a guard for collecting any overflow of oil and for leading it back to the reservoir. Rape oil is generally burnt, a fresh supply being carried in the flask shown.
