Roman earthenware lamp from mine at Rio Tinto, Spain. Maker unknown. Made c. 200 BCE - 300 CE.

This lamp was found in some workings at Rio Tinto, Spain, dating from the Roman period, and shows that no modification of the usual domestic type was made for mining purposes. It is pear-shaped, of unglazed earthenware, and has a hole at one end for the wick and one in the middle for filling. The handle has been broken off.
