Acetylene miner's open lamp, dispatch 440

This is an aluminium lamp, for the use of officials, surveyors, etc., who require a stronger light than the man at the face. It is made in two parts which screw together, a rubber gasket being inserted between the two halves to make the joint gas -tight. Calcium carbide is put in the lower half, which should be not more than half -filled, so as to allow sufficient room for subsequent expansion. Water is put in the upper half and its feed into the carbide is controlled by the milled screw on top of the body. A reflector is cast solid on the upper part of the body. This lamp holds enough carbide for a complete eight-hour shift without re filling, and it is provided with a hook for hanging to any convenient place.
