Safety lamp, Howden and Thresh, Davy type, Argand burner, from Messrs Howden and Thresh, marking: Howden and Thresh patentees, Wakefield, 1859
This oil lamp shows the application of the Argand principle to the Davy lamp, patented in 1859 by Messrs. R. S. Howden and E. Thresh. Air for combustion is taken from a recess in the base of the reservoir; it passes thence through a gauze diaphragm to the central tube; the annular wick is fixed to an arm moving on a thumb -screw projecting from the reservoir. The gauze case is of large volume, a construction now known to be dangerous. A screw lock is fitted.
