Safety lamp, American, Davy type, from the Royal Commission on Accidents in Mines 1879-86, 1885

This lamp is an American pattern, and was patented in 1885 by J. L. Williams and J. Holland. Air for combustion passes in over the glass through gauze over which a tube can be slid, in emergencies; the products of combustion escape at the top. The gauze is doubled above the glass, and outside there is a telescopic metal case so as to regulate the air supply or to cut it off altogether. A screw lock is fitted.
