Safety lamp, Ayton no.5, Davy type, from the Royal Commission on Accidents in Mines 1879-86, maker: J. Mills, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, marking: makers name, 1884
Presented by The Royal Commission on Accidents in Mines.
This is really a Davy in a case, and in slightly modified forms has been somewhat largely used in the North of England. The air is admitted vertically through holes protected by gauze in the bottom ring of the cage, and through the gauze cylinder. The latter is protected by glass below and by a gauze and shield above. The foul air escapes through holes in the cap. There is a lead plug lock.
The Commissioners ' experiments proved these lamps to be unsafe in explosive mixtures at velocities over 1,500 ft. per min. and to give only about 0.2 candlepower
