Safety lamp, Davy, maker: G.J. Newman, London, marking: makers name, 1827-56

This is an early form of the Davy type of lamp. The iron gauze case has the standard number of apertures, i.e., 784 to the sq. in., and it is 'capped," i.e., it has a second or smoke gauze outside the first where the greatest heat is. The case is set in a brass ring, screwed eccentrically to the top of the reservoir, and three upright wires extend from it to form a loop for the carrying ring. There is no lock
