Safety lamp

Safety lamp, Donald, Davy type, Guy's shield, maker: J. Mills and Sons, Newcastle-on-Tyne, marking: makers name, 1901

The Davy lamp has always been considered to give a delicate indication of firedamp, and this shows a lamp arranged as a " jack " lamp (see No. 22) for the purpose. The air is introduced circumferentially under the glass and passes over a baffle before penetrating the gauze, which is shielded with an external glass cylinder, as patented in 1886 by Mr. J. S. Donald. It has Guy's shield, and a screw lock.
