A collection of approximately 101 albumen print photographs mounted in 3 albums commissioned by the Midland Railway. Consists of one brown hardback cover entitled "Photographs of the Works in Progress of the Midland Railway - Rowsley to New Mills, 1860-1865", and two red hardback covers entitled "Photographs of the Works in Progress of the Midland Railway - Extension to London", featuring the construction of St Pancras Station, 1867-1868. Photographs of St Pancras are primarily the work of J B Pyne of Haverstock Hill and J Ward of Euston Road, London.
These three photographic albums were created by the Midland Railway to illustrate major construction projects the company undertook in the 1860s.
One album features the building of railway lines between Rowsley and New Mills in the Derbyshire Peak District from 1860 to 1865. The line was constructed across steep hills and valleys, through eight tunnels and over two viaducts at Millers Dale and Monsal Dale. The line initially ran to Buxton and was then extended to a junction at New Mills and into Manchester at London Road station. The album contains 36 albumen photographic prints showing navvies (railway construction workers) building cuttings, embankments, bridges and viaducts. There are also extracts from the Illustrated News and local newspapers.
Two albums record the construction of the Midland Railway’s London extension into St Pancras.
There are 69 albumen photographic prints showing demolition, the building of cuttings, bridges, tunnels, the line crossing St Pancras cemetery and the erection of the magnificent vaulted station roof designed by William Henry Barlow. There are also group photographs, and scenes showing navvies and industrial locomotives at work. The album also includes contemporary cuttings from the 'Illustrated Times', featuring engravings based on some of the photographs.
Most of the St Pancras photographs were taken by two local photographers, J B Pyne of Haverstock Hill and J Ward of Euston Road.
Albumen prints used egg white to bind photographic chemicals to a paper base. The photographs in these three albums were printed from glass plate negatives.
