Yarn drawing machine, 1928.
This machine embodies the general principles of Sir Richard Arkwright's original frame of 1780. The purpose of the machine is to arrange the fibres in the sliver parallel to each other and to eliminate the thick and thin irregularities in the sliver. This is done by stretching six slivers to six times their length by passing through four successively faster turning rollers and then recombining the six slivers so that the sliver is six times its starting length. This is repeated usually three times so the cotton is attenuated about 216 times in length. The roller speed ratios are: 1:1.25, 1:2.1 and 1:6, i.e. the last roller runs 6 times the speed of the first.
