Willcox and Gibbs chain stitch sewing machine, c. 1914. Willcox and Gibbs chain stitch sewing machine, c. 1914. This is the later version of this popular machine designed on ideas developed by James Gibbs in 1855, which employed a rotating hook (Patented by Gibbs in 1857), four-feed motion and stitch-length indicator. Brown and Sharpe had the contract to make all the sewing machines for Willcox and Gibbs from 1857-1948.
