A ratchet brace is a manual hand tool used with drill bits to bore holes in wood. The brace is a crank-shaped turning device that grips and rotates the hole-cutting tool, the drill bit. Users of the ratchet brace would apply pressure to the top and rotate the handle to drive the drill bit into the wood. The tool was traditionally used by carpenters.
