In the late nineteenth century, wider use was made of iron and steel for constructional purposes. This led to the development of powerful machines for cutting metal sheets of 2.5 cm thickness, and for punching holes for the riveted joints. This 1:8 scale model represents a machine designed for handling large plates. Machines such as this might have been found in a shipyard or a structural ironworks in which items such as bridge components were made.
