Small screw-cutting device or fusee engine for clock-maker's use, c.1800
This small screw-cutting lathe, which was intended to be clamped in a vice, was designed for cutting fusees to use in clock-making
The cutting tool is held on a slide-rest which is constrained to slide parallel to the mandrel which is threaded with a coarse screw. On rotating the mandrel and the work held in the chuck, a nut, which is attached to the slide-rest through a lever, runs along the screw and causes the tool to traverse. The pitch of the screw cut depends on the leverage employed which is adjustable.
