Model of horse-power gun-boring machine, copied from model lent by Royal Artillery Institute

This is a model of the cannon-boring mill designed and built by the Dutch founders Jan and Pieter Verbruggen for the Royal Brass Foundry at Woolwich in 1770. The mill remained in use until the 1840s, and should be considered alongside the cylinder-boring mill built by John Wilkinson at Bersham in setting new standards for precision metal-working on a relatively large scale. The entire Foundry was the subject of a remarkable set of coloured drawings capturing the complete manufacturing cycle of a barrel for an artillery piece in immense detail.
