Richard Roberts was an eminent mechanical engineer and toolmaker. His career began in Wales, he worked in London with the company sytarted by Henry Maudslay, then moved to Manchester and played a central role in the manufacture of textiles machinery - particularly the self-acting mule for cotton spinning, which he patented in 1825.
