Drawing: Elevation and plan of proposed rail/pedestrian bridge across the River Nile. Line drawing with wash, scale c.1/4" : 4'? This drawing is associated with the railway engineering work for Egypt carried out by Robert Stephenson.
Elevation and plan of proposed rail/pedestrian bridge across the Rosetta branch of the River Nile, Egypt at Kafr El Zayyat. Camels, soldiers and a train can be seen crossing the bridge. It spanned a distance of 1,100 feet and was part of the Alexandria to Cairo railway surveyed by Robert Stephenson and was completed in 1858. This bridge, which included a rotating swing bridge to allow the passage of boats, replaced a train ferry at this site. The train ferry had been subject of a paper published in the Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers written by Thomas Sopwith, who had travelled to Egypt with Stephenson in 1856.
