St John & Red Cross fibre above-knee artificial leg, c1914-18. The war amputee who wore this temporary fibre pylon leg, refused the replacement articulated limb he was entitled to. Instead he made very extensive repairs to it over several decades, using both cement and glue. He became a roof thatcher and tiler and when he eventually accepted a conventional prosthesis it had to be heavily weighted to enable him to walk.
