Wooden hand with rigid fingers and semi-opposed tenon thumb. Certalmid wrist section. Made by Steeper, c.1920.
This artificial hand is made from a combination of wood (hand) and certalmid, a lightweight material consisting of muslin, celluloid and certus glue (wrist portion). Certalmid was one of several innovations developed during the First World War when many thousands of artificial limbs were needed for wounded servicemen.
