Health Education poster
1987-1998
1132 posters from the national collection for health education material (originally compiled by the Health Education Authority), made for and used by various British groups promoting health education, not including the Health Education Authority, 1987-98.
The Health Education Authority was established in 1987 as a health authority aimed at encouraging health education and health promotion, and largely funded by the UK government's Department of Health.
Not only committed to providing health education themselves, the HEA also advised the Secretary of State for Social Services on matters relating to health education, supported research into health education and prepared, published and distributed relevant material, the most applicable function of the service in relation to these posters. Posters have been used to share information about health and sanitary matters for decades and are a quick and digestible way to educate the public.
This collection of public health posters was put together by the HEA but does not primarily feature posters they made and distributed. This could tie into another important function of the authority, researching and evaluating other health education services.
The HEA was later replaced by the Health Development Agency and then became the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in 2013.
