Painting: Pan pursuing Syrinx, n.d. [c.1550-1600]. Oil on canvas [or on paper laid to canvas], 24.5x54.3x1.5cm. Anamorphosis, a picture painted in distortion, of the type which may be seen in perspective when viewed at correct angle [at eye level from about two metres to viewer's left]. The subject is Pan pursuing Syrinx with a Latin inscription; action is moving to viewer's right; fingers and arms of Syrinx are very elongated. - Title from printed [sale catalogue?] label stuck on stretcher verso; attributed thence to Early Spanish School. - Handwritten in ink thereon: John Linnell's Trustees. - Another label stuck verso: E.41 [Gabb collection of scientific instruments, catalogue reference]. - Also stencilled 382CP, chalked 7.7.26 [possible sales]. - Hanging ring attached, top centre verso. Stretcher not original, early 20th century. - Condition towards fragile, careful handling required; dirty, surface pitted, slightly flaking
