Round plastic specimen dish containing Erythroxylon Truxillense (dried coca leaves). 20 mm x 162 mm diameter, 272g. Handwritten label underneath reads, ' Erythloxylon Coca'. Unknown maker, unknown origin.

In 1855, the addictive substance cocaine was first isolated from coca leaves. Erythloxylon coca or coca was used for thousands of years in what is now Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. It was exported to Europe and was used for a trange of tonics, stimulants and pain relief. However, once its addictive properties were released, laws were passed in several countries to make it illegal to own and use.
