Circular, magnetic coil with lead for transcranial magnetic stimulator, model 200, by The Magstim Company Limited, Whitland, Wales, 1998. Used for painless cortical or peripheral nerve stimulation.
Magnetic stimulation is a non-invasive and painless method of exciting neurons. It uses strong, time-varying magnetic fields. These are generated by a stimulating coil held close to the intended site of stimulation. By stimulating nerves, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) may alleviate depression and conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The coil allows the magnetic fields to be applied accurately to the correct part of the body.
This technique was developed in the 1980s at the University of Sheffield, England. This coil was manufactured by The Magstim Company Limited in Wales.
