This compound microscope was owned and used by Dame Lucy Aldrich-Blake (1865-1925). Blake was the first woman to obtain the qualification Master of Surgery (MS) in the United Kingdom, in 1895. In that same year she became the first woman to hold the post of anaesthetist at the Royal Free Hospital, the teaching hospital for the London School of Medicine for Women. In 1896 she was appointed surgical registrar at the Royal Free, the first woman to hold the position. In 1910, Blake was elected Fellow of the Royal Society.
