Plastic organelle model of ribosomes from a cell

A ribosome is found in all cells. It reads the messenger RNA (mRNA) sequence and translates that genetic code into a specified string of amino acids, which grow into long chains that fold to form proteins. mRNA is carrier of protein information from the DNA in a cell's nucleus to the cell's cytoplasm - the liquid that fills a cell.

This model, among others, was made for a Science Museum gallery called ‘Cells, Molecules and Life’ which opened in 1986 and closed in 1999. The gallery was sponsored by the Biochemical Society to celebrate their 75th anniversary.
